COACHING EVALUATION CRITERIA
Being involved in coaching searches at both the College and NFL level, there are important qualities of a candidate that must be scrutinized, much like in evaluating a player. From time to time, I will make mention of coaches and their skills including the ranking and analysis of their abilities and performances.
  • In order to be successful as a head coach, a candidate must be OUTSTANDING in five of the areas listed below, and GOOD in at least two others.
  • If he is lacking in any of these areas, he must hire assistant coaches exceptionally well in areas where he is not strong. In these cases, the quality of his staff is more important than those who excell in those areas.
  • In order to be a good COLLEGE ASSISTANT COACH, a candidate must be OUTSTANDING in two of the following three areas: 1.Technical-Knowing football on the blackboard. 2.Teaching football on the field 3.Recruiting-ability to evaluate and convince prospects to attend your institution.
  • In order to be a good NFL ASSISTANT COACH, a candidate must be OUTSTANDING in both of the following areas 1.Technical-Knowing football on the blackboard. 2.Teaching Football on the field.
Character/Loyalty An indicator of coaching reputation and respect level among peers in the football community, not the public or media perception.
Background Experience and achievement level to this point in his career. An association with a winning program helps but it is not a necessity.
Player and Staff Development The ability to teach, communicate and develop players technical skills. This includes the knowledge of positional technique, use of players within scheme concepts and the ability to motivate and generate the most out of a player’s ability. It also includes the ability to teach and develop assistant coaches on his staff.
Technical The ability to design and implement systems and game plans, including creating favorable matchup situations and game day adjustments. It also includes the teaching of assistant coaches and players in a classroom situation. This is known as “knowing football."
Teaching The ability to translate knowledge from the technical sense onto the practice field, where the coach can creatively get his point across to help players understand thoroughly and quickly. Motivation is a crucial part of teaching.
Talent Evaluation The ability to identify the technical and athletic traits of players. It also includes the ability to evaluate other coaches' skills.
Recruiting/Salesmanship The ability to show verbally, on the blackboard, and in film cutups how a player fits into the football system, as well as how he fits into the team's chemistry and community.
Program/Team Management The ability to work with staff administrators, personnel and support staff.
